Improved and revised, the Katahdin is the second generation of ultralight backpacks available from Equinox. Using many of the key components found in the Pound Plus Pack, the Katahdin offers innovative solutions toward improving the overall pack performance and comfort. To begin with, the Katahdin’s bottom cinch strap has been aligned with the hip belt to offer improved “in-line” weight transferal to the hips. The hip belt now offers added padding in the lower lumbar region for improved stability and comfort. The sternum strap has been redesigned for “no-slip” performance. The shoulder straps were slightly raised to help distribute more weight on the hips and offer improved carrying comfort. Super strong waterproof 1.1oz rip stop nylon has replaced the outer mesh to offer improved water resistance and create an attractive, incredibly functional pack. Standard features include two large capacity side pockets for easy access to frequently used gear, two lower mesh water bottle pockets, solid mesh backing for exceptional ventilation, adjustable hip belt to accommodate different torso lengths, inch foam straps with EVA for comfort and lightweight durability The Katahdin’s exceptional performance is due in part to three compression straps aligned on the back of the pack. Utilizing these straps properly creates a solid frame, “tube-like” structure that replaces the traditional “framed” pack. Unlike most other ultralight packs on the market today, the straps work exceptionally well at minimizing strain on the shoulders and help to properly transfer weight to the hips, an impressive feature of a pack that only weights 22 ounces! Check out the review in the Ultralight Gear Guide in the August 2006 issue of Backpacker magazine.
